Understanding Taoist Funeral
Customs and Traditions

Buddhist Funeral Rituals and Traditions
Taoist funerals are typically a multi-day event, meticulously planned to honour the deceased and provide comfort to the grieving family. It begins with the setting up of a ceremonial altar, often adorned with offerings of food, incense, and symbolic items.

A significant aspect of Taoist funeral traditions is the chanting of scriptures by Taoist priests who lead the congregation in prayers that are believed to help guide the soul to the right spiritual realm, purify the space and protect the living from negative energies.

In Singapore, Taoist funeral rituals are influenced by the various Chinese dialect groups—Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, and Hainanese—bringing distinct cultural nuances to the Taoist funeral traditions.

While the customs and rituals remain deeply traditional in Singapore, there have been adaptations to fit contemporary urban life, such as shortening the duration of funeral rites and simplifying certain practices.

Taoist Funeral Rituals for Different
Dialect Groups

Hokkien

The Hokkien community, one of the largest dialect groups in Singapore, places a strong emphasis on elaborate rituals and offerings.

Hokkien Taoist funerals are known for their grandeur, often involving extensive use of joss paper offerings and elaborate paper effigies with specific chanting rituals conducted by Taoist priests to ensure the safe passage of the deceased to the afterlife.

Teochew

Teochew Taoist funerals are distinguished by their deep focus on filial piety. The Teochew community places great importance on honouring ancestors and ensuring that the deceased receives a proper send-off.

Their funerals often feature a series of rites that include the burning of large, elaborate joss paper structures and the performance of traditional music with a unique custom of conducting multiple prayer sessions, where a Taoist priest chants specific scriptures over several days.

Cantonese

The Cantonese approach to Taoist funerals often includes the use of symbolic objects such as lanterns and banners, which are believed to guide the spirit of the deceased, as well as their use of specific colours in mourning attire, where black may be worn in addition to white.

The rituals often include the use of gongs and drums during the funeral procession, with Taoist priests leading the way.

Hakka

Hakka Taoist funerals tend to be more subdued compared to other dialect groups, but they are no less significant. The Hakka community places great emphasis on the recitation of Taoist scriptures by priests to ensure the purification of the soul.

Offerings of food and joss paper are made with particular attention to detail, reflecting the Hakka belief in providing for the deceased in the afterlife.
