In Singapore, the National Environment Agency (NEA) burial policy enforces a 15-year burial period limit, meaning that certain plots at Choa Chu Kang Cemeterymust be cleared starting June 2026. Exhumation follows a structured process to ensure compliance with NEA regulations while respecting cultural and religious traditions.
The grave site (burial ground) is inspected, marked, and prepared for grave exhumation. This step is done by professional staff of NEA or by authorised private contractors.
After the site survey, families must register and apply for the necessary permits through NEA. This step is mandatory for allowing the exhumation to proceed legally and must be completed before any further arrangements.
Families can select an auspicious exhumation date and perform a groundbreaking ceremony with prayers or rituals to honor cultural or religious traditions, conducted by a priest, monk, or religious representative. Family-appointed representatives can assist with planning and execution.
